I am the smallest Farthing in the three generations photo, taken at our house in Tunbridge Wells. The last time I met Bruce was at my own father's funeral in 2004 and there was little time to talk. But Bruce's quiet and caring presence was there on that day and indeed throughout my life - always thoughtfully looking out for his family and friends. For me as a youngster, this took the form of regular postcards addressed specially to me from his many trips around the world, which captured my imagination (a true gift to a young mind) and made quite a collection! So I'd like to extend greetings to everyone who was similarly touched by Bruce's kindness. And thanks, of course, to my uncle Bruce, wherever you may be now.

We are grieved at Bruce's abrupt departure from all of our lives, but particularly from yours Anne and Richard. We remember him fondly from our days at IMCO, now the International Maritime Organization, from 1976 to 1980. He was always an authoritative figure with strong opinions about what should be done in the maritime world and a good friend to us, then young novices in international maritime matters.
